Morecambe Faces: Thomas Powney

MORECAMBE FACES: A PORTRAIT OF MORECAMBE

The views are spectacular and the scope for rediscovering its heyday is immense.”

Thomas Powney, 2019

Tom describes himself as a “husband and father, cyclist, resident, and business owner,” but there’s a little more to it than that because Tom is Chair of Morecambe BID and Managing Director of Briggs Shoes. Briggs is a family firm that was established in 1863 by his great-great-grandfather.

He came to live in Morecambe in Sept 2016 after the Company HQ relocated here from Kendal where lived formerly. “The people of Kendal,” he says, tend to look down their noses at Morecambe, yet it’s a far more enjoyable place to live.”

He clearly loves the place, going on to talk about “the friendliness of the people, and the passion they have for their home town” which has obviously impressed him. “The views are spectacular and the scope for rediscovering its heyday is immense,” he told me. His favourite memory, however, is of “proposing to my wife at the end of the stone jetty. (She said yes).”

When asked about his hopes for Morecambe, he wishes quite simply “to see the negative minority without anything to criticise.”
